A Small Town at the Turn of the Century 1999-2000 // Simryn Gill // 40 photographs, C-print on paper
In the final room of Tate Modern’s permanent display, Citizens and State, is a series of 40 colorful photographs that immediately catch your eye. People are shown in the photos in a variety of poses from cooking to chatting to playing on a swing. But where are their faces? Instead of seeing their facial features, you see a piece of fruit. Artist Simryn Gill plays with views of local Malaysian culture with her images of people’s faces covered with exotic fruit.
