Filament Pavilion

FullSizeRender-8Elytra // University of Stuttgart // Glass, carbon fibre

Hovering over the garden outside the V&A is a large, transparent…well what is it? It is the Filament Pavilion designed by a team of architects and engineers from the University of Stuttgart. To kick off engineering season, this futuristic work was inspired by beetles when they fly. Beetles flutter from spot to spot, and likewise this pavilion will expand from spot to spot. Equipped with sensors, the pavilion will expand based  upon what is detected.  The pavilion is ever growing. Titled Elytra, the pavilion is created out of glass and carbon fibre and its expansion is controlled by a robot. I wonder how far Elytra will expand by the end of the summer?
