Urchin // Caroline O’Donnell // Photograph by Erin Fong
The title of the work, “Urchin,” seems like a perfect fit. The long oval shape and jagged edges of the sculpture resembles a sea urchin. Though on closer inspection something immediately stands out. This work is composed of outdoor white plastic chairs stacked together in an outward swirl. The original function of the chair is lost and visitors are forced to rethink the way they interact with this ordinary object. “Urchin” is part of the 2016 CCA (Cornell Council for the Arts) Biennial where the theme is Object Empathies: Empathy in Cultural Practice as Method, Remedy, Structure, and Screen.
