Sunset 1 – 18 // Sadie Benning // 2016 // wood, casein, acrylic gouache & aqua resin // 38 x 54 in
Entering Susanne Vielmetter’s Gallery in Culver City I was taken back by the first work I saw. 18 horizontal panels were arranged on the wall all depicting the same scene: a sunset. Conceived by Sadie Benning, these seemingly identical 18 sunsets were made with casein, acrylic gouache and aqua resin. Since Benning created these panels by hand, each sunset is actually slightly different. It is up to the viewer to notice the subtle differences between each adjacent panel. This small variation of details and juxtapositions are a common thread in Benning’s works.
