Inflammatory Essays

IMG_6630Inflammatory Essays // Jenny Holzer // 1979-1982 // Offset posters on colored paper

Red, yellow, pink, hot pink, green and lime green sheets cover a monumental wall in The Broad Museum. These colored sheets are filled with clusters of texts that both spark intrigue and challenge the reader. They are Jenny Holzer’s “Inflammatory Essays.” The questions and statements Holzer poses prompts the viewer to think more critically about these everyday issues.

Infinity Room

To infinity and beyond! Well not actually. But in the Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room — The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away at The Broad Museum in Los Angeles, you are allowed the opportunity to feel as though you are in a room that continues for infinity. In a small room, water covers the floor leaving only a small exposed platform for you to stand. The walls are covered in mirrors with LED lights hanging from the ceiling. After the door closes, you are left alone for 45 seconds. The brightness of the lights slowly change and your reflection seems to continue forever. To capture the moment you can even take a selfie like the one I did!

The Broad 2.0

The first time I went to The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles, I was mesmerized by the building’s architecture, the natural lighting of the works and the viewable vault. Today was my second trip to The Broad and I found myself even more impressed. The Broad’s collection is impressive, showcasing works from artists such as Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami and Kara Walker. This museum is worth the trip downtown. However, be sure to get your tickets online before you go to avoid the long queue!

Body Suit

Would you wear a body suit? How about the ones designed by artist Goshka Macuga? Macula’s two body suits hang in The Broad Museum. These body suits are designed to resemble a female body, however they are distorted, especially when worn as the material stretches. These outfits were designed based upon drawings by artist Miroslav Tichy, and thus the title of the work is Suit for Tichy.

Tips for Artists

FullSizeRender 69Tips for Artists Who Want to Sell // John Baldessari // Acyrlic on canvas // 1966 – 1968

In a work that he did not paint, conceptual artist John Baldessari provides three important tips for artists who want to sell their work. Witty yet surprisingly convincing, Baldessari commentates on the art market and what society deems important qualities for art works in order to be sold. Do you think these tips are accurate?

The Broad

IMG_4299 2Los Angeles has a new contemporary art museum! The Broad Museum opened this past September in downtown LA and is free to all, just so long as you reserve a ticket online in advance. Seems simple enough. However, these tickets are a coveted item at the moment. People have to book months in advance due to the museum’s popularity. The 2,000 work collection includes a wide range of artists such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Keith Haring and Yayoi Kusama. After months of anticipation I finally had the opportunity to visit the Broad. Here are a few of my favorite works.
