In a darkened room a tall, vertical screen looms over a pile of sand scattered with partially working electronics. Various scenes flash on the screen including a mannequin face, people riding escalators and scenes from shopping malls in the Middle East. The video work, titled Black Friday, and the electronic installation titled The Litany, explore  consumerism and the adaptation of the shopping mall into the Gulf Arab nations, something the artist, Sophia Al-Maria, calls “Gulf Futurism.”

Art is in full swing at The Whitney Museum of American Art, especially with their exhibition of works by Stuart Davis, In Full Swing. Davis combines bright and bold colors with his love of abstraction and consumer slogans and products to create his works such as his champion painting Little Giant Still Life and his material object painting Super Table.

Virginia Overton

On the balcony of the newly designed Whitney Museum of American Art, Virginia Overton has created a blossoming oasis. Large basins teem with water grass and lilies of brilliant pinks and purples. Two tall windmills tower above providing energy and power to help sustain the potted ecosystems. If the New York summer is too hot for you, Overton brings the outdoors inside with her sculptures and installations.
